This section covers all the valentines I have made and (once I upload all the images) all the ones I have received. As an added bonus, I will include some of the items I made for people for whom I had a yen. When I woo, I make and give little things.

So far, that strategy hasn't worked all that well, but the stuff has been okay.

This is just the envelope, photos inside coming soon!

2005: Valentine from Laura Heyman

Laura is an old schoolmate who is an incisive photographer. This is just the envelope she made that year — as I unearth my collection, I will scan and add the photos themselves.

John is one of my favorite people ever.

2004: Valentine from John Stoney

I have some brilliant friends, and John is one of those people. An amazing sculptor, he also makes for a fine Valetiner. This print holds a special place in my home, always prominently displayed. I love you, nice person.

A little naughty, a lot nice

Valentine from Shayne, 2000

When we were all at grad school together, there were some magnificent valentines exchanged. This one is absolutely one of my favorites of all time. Shayne is a dear dear friend and an intelligent photographer, always embedding subversive signals in his beautiful, beautiful images.

1995: Valentine from Russell, age 5

This is the valentine that started it all...

1995: Valentine from Russell, age 5
Magazine clipping on sketch paper

I worked in a Montessori school the year after I finished undergrad, and it was a transformative experience. First of all, there was the entire system, an experiential educative structure, all about the child and her reality at a specific age. There was the fact that I was witnessing the growth and development of 11 3-year-olds who completely obliterated several hang-ups I had cultivated about myself and the world around me...

Then there was this Valentine from Russell, the older brother of Maya (a favorite of mine)... I knew him from babysitting and play groups, always thought he was a great kid. He made this in about 2 minutes, and I thought it was just beautiful. I asked him why he used this image, and he simply said, "Libby, it's how I feel." And went back to playing tag.

This is a valentine, people. I am just a dabbler.
